SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, isn’t just a one time strategy which can be completed and then abandoned. There’s a lot more to SEO than meets the eye. Here are some practical SEO truths which might inspire you to take a second glance at your content.

1. Top Keywords Change

Even if you get your content to rank at the top of Google search results, it’s important not to stop SEO and keyword efforts. Though you may be ranking well today, “the top” of Google results are always changing. This is because Google and similar search engines are constantly updating, and search engine rankings change accordingly. SEO isn’t just a one time effort. It’s a constant effort which is necessary to keep any content ranking at the top.

2. Quality is More Important Than Quantity

The old marketing proverb “content is king” is one that Jason Hartman firmly believes in. While it may seem easy to constantly pump out less than ideal content, it won’t help your site rank higher in search engine results. Google is looking for quality, in both content and links. In fact, if you’re trying to build a sustainable SEO strategy, quality, not quantity, is always the way to go. Though this strategy may take more effort, it’s worth it in the long run. SEO is not a quick fix with immediate results, it takes effort and time. But once you succeed, it’s definitely worth the effort.

3. Mass Links Hurt More Than Help

Previously, massive amounts of links would help content rank higher in the search engines, but a recent update by Google changed all that. Now, more links don’t mean better results. In fact, large amounts of poor links will make sites fall to new lows in terms of search engine rankings. For the best results, focus on collecting quality links. A single high quality link can be worth several low quality links, so it’s best to spend the time normally spent on collecting mass links focusing instead on collecting a few high quality ones.

4. Rankings Sometimes Fluctuate

Because Google and other search engines consistently update their search algorithms, top ranking keywords will sometimes drop, and as a result, content focusing on those keywords will drop as well. Many times, this can be written off as a phase. Rankings are fluctuating all the time. Plenty of top ranking keywords which drop move back up in the results within a short amount of time, so there’s no reason to panic.
